Never Take Your Healthy Teeth for Granted

About Me

Never Take Your Healthy Teeth for Granted

When I was growing up, my mother took my three brothers and I to the dentist for check-ups every six months, and while my brothers all tended to need cavity fillings after the exams, I didn't get a cavity for almost my entire childhood! That led me to start feeling like my teeth were "invincible," and once I moved out of my parents house, I started skipping my trips to the dentist. I soon regretted it, because I developed a toothache that put me through the worst pain of my life. I went to visit the dentist, and he told me that not only did I need a root canal, but I also had two additional cavities to fill! I have since dedicated myself to good oral hygiene, and I decided to start a blog to share my oral health tips and encourage others to take care of their teeth!

What To Know About Sedation Dentistry

While many don't like heading to the dentist, some people experience anxiety or even extreme fear that can make routine dental care challenging or impossible. For those who cannot go through a dental appointment without experiencing fear or anxiety, sedation dentistry may be able to help. Different sedation techniques can make trips to the dentist more manageable and less stress-inducing. Here's what you should know about sedation dentistry if you are considering whether it's right for your needs.

When To Ask About Sedation Dentistry

Dental health is essential to your overall health. Ignoring dental problems and avoiding treatment can lead to significant issues down the road. If you're avoiding the dentist, you'll want to ask whether sedation dentistry is appropriate for your needs. Sedation dentistry can be an excellent solution for those who experience anxiety or fear at the dentist's office. Sedation dentistry is also a fantastic option for those with highly sensitive teeth, a fear of needles, an overactive gag reflex, or special needs.

There Are Different Sedation Levels

Since the level of fear and anxiety you may have toward the dentist and dental procedures can vary, so do the levels of sedation available. Dental sedation levels include minimal, moderate, and deep sedation. With minimal sedation, you will be awake while at the dentist but more relaxed. With moderate sedation, you'll be conscious but probably won't remember much afterward. With deep sedation, you're minimally conscious but can be awakened. For those with extreme anxiety or fear, general anesthesia may be used. With general anesthesia, you will be unconscious the entire time.

How Much It Costs

If you think that sedation dentistry is the right option for you, you'll want to consider the cost. How much you pay for sedation dentistry depends on the level of sedation and the methods used. Minimal sedation options typically cost between $150 and $500. Moderate and deep sedation methods range from $250 to $900. General anesthesia is the priciest option for dental sedation and costs $300 to $1,000. While sedation dentistry can be beneficial, it's typically not covered by dental insurance. Before seeking out sedation, discuss the costs with your dentist.
